Our last meeting Talk on Antifreeze by Malcolm Connelly of Comma Oils For the November Meeting Malcolm Connelly, the Area Manager for Comma Oils came alone this time, to talk about anti-freeze. To recap, Comma was founded 1965 and produce over 400 products selling in 40 countries and are based in Gravesend, Kent and are part of Exxon Mobil. They probably supply something you have; screen wash, oil, hand care as well as anti-freeze. They are sole sponsors in F2 and support Palmersport amongst others. Their oil is based on Mobil, same source, but it's in the refining that grades the oil (golf ball to tennis ball finish being the analogy for the molecules). Onto anti-freeze, Malcolm provided a nice slide show explaining the differences in type, from the basic or "std commodity" which meets BS6580, which can be mixed. Colour only tells of the different type, which are; silicate (good for 3 years), OAT (Organic Additive Technology for 5years ) and SI-OAT (5 years especially mixed for VW group). It's the additives that make the difference to protect against corrosion and erosion. Silicates form a barrier whereas OAT's tend to stick where needed (more like a finer film) allowing the coolant to flow more quickly to dissipate the heat. There's an on-line look-up (www. commaoil.com) and a book that advises of all of the fluids to be recommended for all cars dating back approximately 15 years. There were plenty of questions keeping Malcolm entertaining us with his answers and it is a very complicated, sometimes confusing technology. The basic message was, change at the recommended intervals to help to avoid issues such as holes or erosion due to failed anti-rusting inhibitors etc. A brief, but interesting talk about a subject that many of us don’t think about too much. Many thanks to Mike Sharman for providing this report.
